Background to the Survey

The New Zealand Survey of Corporate Environmental Responsiveness was introduced by Massey University in 1999 and is based on the UK Index of Environmental Engagement which Business in the Environment administers with the FTSE 350 and companies in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Group. The Index is the UK’s pre-eminent benchmarking tool, highly regarded by city analysts as well as business for its integrity and usefulness. While providing the basic model for New Zealand’s first benchmarking exercise, it also gives scope for international comparisons of data. The Programme for Business and Sustainable Development has sole permission to use the Business in the Environment Index in New Zealand. Companies do not pay to participate in the Survey.

The Survey has provided the opportunity for a research-led industry partnership as well as a practical tool for assessing how systematic a company’s approach to environmental management is, and provides a company with measurement of its evolution to strategic environmental business planning over the years. While representing only one aspect of the business shift to sustainable development, benchmarking of levels of environmental responsiveness is one way that business can demonstrate corporate commitment to sustainable development, and it is fundamental to the sustainability shift.The key objectives of the Survey's are:

• to raise awareness about environmental issues and the business role in the transition to sustainable development

• to assess progress that leading New Zealand companies consider they have made against ten key attributes of environmental engagement

• to encourage companies to increase their levels of environmental responsiveness.
